Soul of Guardian , developed by China-based WSGame, is a new MMORPG released in March 16, 2012. The game has received much criticism from critics and players since its commercial launch. The developers has stolen some artworks from Guild Wars and Neverwinter, claiming their own works.
I have a pretty smooth start in Battlesoul City of Soul of Guardian—going around communicating with the NPCs and accomplishing various quests required with the help of auto-navigation and auto-attacking. Not a single miss in a thousand times! I bet you can even progress by blindly clicking the mouse according to the detailed guidance, and every tiny accomplishment you’ve achieved will be sung high praise of by the NPCs.
I just feel ashamed to admit that I grow from a newbie to an experienced warrior of level 30 at a stretch, without being quite certain of what the game really emphasizes. Since my Health and Mana are restored automatically, it seems that the whole game is all about immortal humans fighting with the constantly emerging demons?
Preliminary combat experiences
All my quests are clearly listed on the right side of the screen. What is convenient is that there is a Flying Shoe, functioning similarly to a portal, which can take me directly to my destination every time I am required to take a quest. On the other hand, if I do not choose this short cut, I can still effortlessly walk to new quests without having to steer by the obstacles.
Another comfort for me is to have a cute panda pet around, which can assist me through all quests. However, at the preliminary phase, I have met a large number of warriors who are similarly dressed and equipped, with the same pandas following behind. Then, it becomes difficult for me to recognize my character, especially when various characters are aiming at the same genre of demons. As a result, my sense of existence is lost and I often fail in targeting the monsters.
In addition, the classic background music in this game, more suitable to martial arts-themed games like Age of Wulin, is unusually persistent, without any rhythmical rise and fall in accordance with the switch of scenarios.
Although WSGame announced four quest modes in all—the main storyline quest along with branch quests, repeated quests and guild quests, by far, I have not figures out any main difference among these quests except for the change of demons and the NPCs that issue the orders. This may to some extent reduce the fascination of the game and result in a loss of gamers in the preliminary phase before the real excitement of the game is uncovered.
Can’t wait to level up
Soul of Guardian enables newbies to enter dungeons and participate in events at a low level, which may account for my surprisingly quick and unprepared level up to 30. However, to be frank, this process is both boring and time-consuming.
Then, since level 30, I am allowed to create or join in guilds, and successively, I will be able to enter more challenging scenarios. It seems that the real intractable missions have just arrived, but the upgrade pace is apparently slowed. Hopefully, I can have an amazingly venturous trip in both single and guild quests at high levels.
