Warbarons

Warbarons is a single and multiplayer strategy game played in the browser. It’s not a MMO game, but a classic turn based game for 2-8 players per game. It draws inspiration from several old school turn based games and also modern RTS games. Warbarons is very multiplayer oriented, we love challenging clever strategy games where you will beat your opponent by being smart, patient, planning, reading the other players movement and reacting to them. That is the kind of game play you get in Warbarons. There is no reason to guard your empire 24/7 and feed your horses to be successful here. (You can’t buy game advantages either, it’s about pure skill)

Game modes

There are currently 3 different game modes. 1 on 1 / Free For All, team games and scenario games.
1 on 1 is usually quicker intense games on smaller maps. 1 on 1 games often last from 1 day to 5 days for active players.

Free for all (FFA) has the component of diplomacy. If you want to make it to the end it’s not just about being good, you also need to make the right pacts, and break them at the right time. FFA games can take quite a while to finish but are really addicting. At the beginning of a 8 player FFA you might do 1-2 turns per week, but as players lose the game gets faster. You often want to have several FFA games going to get your daily dose.

You can either jump into a open team game with random players or form your own team with friends and play against other teams on a ladder ranking and try climb and face better teams. Coordinating your efforts with your friends and being successful in outplaying the other team can be quite satisfactionary. In team games all players of the same team can do their turn simultaneously so team games progress faster even with 8 players in the same game.

Scenario games are games where the mapmaker have created a setup often based on historic or fantasy worlds. For example you might have a setup with leaders such as Ramses, Caesar, Alexander and other leaders from around the mediterranean.

Gameplay

You start as the baron of a castle. Your goal is to expand and capture a percentage of the other cities on the map to be the winner. You can’t build new cities, they are all placed on the map at the start of the game. You can upgrade city walls and buy new production capacity in cities. You can also destroy and rebuild cities. When the game starts you want to capture as many neutral cities as you can until you meet the other barons. Since you can’t see the defense and return from a city until you discover it you need to plan ahead and scouting your surroundings is crucial.

The strategy here is really focused on moving armies on the map to secure production, and making cleaver estimates of what it will take to capture the next city. Will you split your forces and try to take 2 cities or play safe and go for one? Should you save gold for a powerful unit or produce many weaker units fast?

In order to come out with victory you have 35 unique creatures and armies choose from each with its own particular strength and usage. You also have a set of heroes that you can hire to lead your armies. Heroes gain experience points and level up giving you the chance to improve their skills. Heroes can also find equipment that improves their leadership skills.

Infantry can build fortification towers to seal of narrow passages forcing the enemy to either try to break through the fort or take another road to enter your land. There are also temples where armies can be blessed for additional stamina and battle skills.
